South America restructure 😭😭

Geography

So I've always believed in the Berenstein Bears Mandela effect, but for some reason, that was a more entertaining one for me. Same with the fruit of the loom - no harm no foul. It was a point of curiosity and intrigue for me more than anything alarming.

But after tonight, I'm genuinely having a moment of - am I new here? Am I new to this timeline? Help!

So basically, I was going through a map of the world with my preschooler, when I suddenly noticed that Panama and Costa Rica had somehow migrated to Central America from where they originally were in South America. First I was confused. Then I remembered memorising the countries in the Americas as a kid, and for Panama and Costa Rica I specifically repeated the last part of the tune I'd been using for South America before starting the next phrase of the tune because THEY WERE IN SOUTH AMERICA, duh.

The next part of the tune I had made up to memorise the countries started anew at Nicaragua and Honduras because those were the southernmost countries in Central America (as I worked my way up the map).

So just to entertain myself, I searched whether anyone else had this, and I didn't necessarily find this specifically, but lots of people discussing now Central America used to be there (duh! That's because there were two countries fewer!) And also people saying that South America had somehow drifted right. So I looked at what they meant and HOLY SHIT. What in the what????

I have never seen that before, so did I just not notice or am I new to this timeline?

First of all, I'd lived in Mexico City for a bit as a child and there and I don't recall there being only water between our country and the South Pole. There was like a whole continent landmass there. At the same time, there's something weird about Cuba. Like I'd done multiple cruises from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean, some of which had Cozumel, Mexico as our first port and I don't remember having to do such a massive detour around Cuba to get there. Which you'd have to do if you went by today's map.

This is honestly one of the more disturbing ones to me because the realness makes it feel extra dystopian. And the more I look at this map, the less I remember the old version. Like a lemming walking off the edge right into a new narrative without looking back. Aaaaaaaa.
