My (25F) former colleague (25M), who had less experience than me, was paid more for the same job title and role
Hello!
For context I (25F) live in Quebec, Canada. I apologise if I don't explain well, because I usually speak French.
I've been working at my job since September 2025, but have been working at this specific position since January 2026. I have two years of experience in this exact same field, as well as two Diploma of College Studies (3 years each), one that is very relevant to the job, the second at are very relevant to my job.
This position has a higher pay rate than the previous one, so my salary was upgraded to 23,08$.
At that time, another employee (25M) was working at that position too. He had been working at the organisation for a little over a year, but he'd only been working in that particular role since summer 2025.
He has one college diploma that's somewhat relevant to the job. He has never worked in the same field. He has had a job more or less relevant to the job. He told me he was being paid 24,75$. He's since left, but during the time I'd been working with him, I taught him many things since I have more experience than him, and he was still learning. We had the same exact tasks.
At that time, we had a different HR representative. That HR has since left, replaced by a new one.
I spoke to HR about my concerns about a month after signing the contract (at that time, I didn't know about my colleague's salary). Around the same time, the organization was conducting a pay equity review, and everyone's résumé was reviewed. Once this was done, HR came back to me, told me I'd still be paid 23,08$, and that he couldn't give me an answer as to why my former colleague had been paid more, that he didn't know.
Is there something I can do about this, legally?
TLDR : My former colleague was paid more than me for the same job role and the same tasks, but he has less experience than me. I'm wondering if there's something I can do about it.
