Why do companies make you create an account just to buy one thing online? Do they actually make money from that?

tried to buy a single usb cable from a website yesterday. literally one cable, $8. and they want my full name, email, phone number, shipping address obviously, AND I have to create a password and verify my email before I can checkout??

guest checkout exists on some sites but half the time it's hidden behind a tiny link at the bottom. just feels like they're harvesting data at this point. is there actually a business reason for this or is it purely a data collection play?
