You’ve always wanted to be an actress . Many including most in your family had advised not studying theatre in college but instead focus on something that you could built a career off of.  This also made sense coming from a conservative Christian background where the arts was something frowned upon. But theatre was your passion. You knew this was what you were meant for. Unfortunately getting cast in stuff was also a big challenge. You got into one of the biggest arts schools in the state but it felt impossible you get your foot into the door.

You felt a small miracle when you got cast in a play! A Shakespearean play.  Directed by Denise! Denise Gabrielle was a legend on campus. She was a mature woman who had connections with old actors from across the country. A career that was rivaled by Merrill Streep. Who was now a professor/ director at your college and had just cast you as the lead in the play. Things could not be going better. The small hiccup being that in this production of Romeo and Juliet, was an all female cast.

“We’re challenging the gender conformity of society. Challenging Shakespeare! Shakespearean productions would be men dressed as women. Well now we’re doing the opposite” Denise said at our first rehearsal. I usually love creative stuff like this. But I had to admit, due to being a Christian woman I had some reservations about sharing love scenes with a woman. “I’m going to be making changes to the material as well. I will be asking you to do things that will feel challenging or controversial. But that’s the cost for true art” Denise concluded. You would know first hand by what she meant by that when you’re introduced to me.

“I’d like you to meet Grace! She’ll be playing your Romeo” Denise introduced you to me in our private one on one.  “I’m going to introduce a bit of method acting to help you both. I want you both to start dating”

I could feel you tense up. Kissing a girl on stage was one thing but dating in private sounded like a nightmare. I saw you sputter and try and think of a way out of this.

“I know some actors will be uncomfortable with this but I want to reiterate this is extremely important. If you’re not up to the task we will have to recast. Can you do this for me?” Denise asked and I placed my hand on your leg. “She’ll do it”

Anyone who has studied theatre knows that there is borderline uncomfortable stuff happening all the time. The general idea is that you’re a straight girl forced to play the role of a lesbian.
