Can any recovering alcoholic or ex-alcoholic share their experience?

I'm writing a character who is an alcoholic and gradually quits as the story progresses, but I don't know what the alcohol detoxification process is like, and there are no alcoholic people in my close circle so I'd appreciate it if someone could share their experience. If anyone could tell me about their experience, not just the technical aspects, but especially their personal experience of the process.
