7 Questions Every Couple Should Ask Before Starting IVF
Starting IVF can feel like entering a world of tests, injections, medical terminology and difficult decisions.
Before beginning treatment, ask your fertility specialist these seven questions:
- Why are you recommending IVF for us?
Understand the diagnosis and whether options such as timed intercourse, ovulation induction or IUI are reasonable first.
- Have both partners been evaluated?
Fertility challenges may involve the female partner, male partner, both partners or remain unexplained. A complete evaluation can prevent unnecessary delays.
- What is our realistic chance of success?
Ask for an estimate based on age, ovarian reserve, sperm parameters, medical history and the clinic’s relevant outcomes—not a general success percentage.
- What does one complete IVF cycle include?
Clarify whether “one cycle” means stimulation and egg retrieval only, or also embryo freezing and subsequent embryo transfers.
- What medicines and procedures will be involved?
Ask about the treatment timeline, injections, monitoring visits, egg retrieval, possible side effects and warning signs requiring urgent attention.
- What will the total cost probably be?
Request a written estimate covering medicines, investigations, procedures, freezing, storage, embryo transfer and possible additional treatments.
- What happens if the first cycle is unsuccessful?
Discuss how the results will be reviewed, what may change in the next attempt and when continuing, pausing or exploring another option may be appropriate.
IVF should be a shared and informed decision—not something a couple feels pressured to begin immediately.
Which of these questions would you most want your fertility specialist to answer clearly?
