The Unseen
The Thing
While trying to understand Mercurius, I noticed that he kept slipping away from my mind. The more carefully I looked, the blurrier he became. Was this a problem with me, or with his nature?
Perhaps it was because he was too open; not a secret hiding itself, but an openness hiding itself.
My mind, accustomed to looking at objects, may have been unable to see movement and attraction. As if I could not perceive a wholeness that had neither a center nor a fixed point of focus.
He was not behind a veil. There was no veil at all. I merely assumed there was one. The mist itself was what I had been searching for.
How was I supposed to see him, to recognize him? Present at the center of my gaze, yet remaining outside my field of vision...
The answer was not to try to notice him.
Mercurius makes himself noticed. You cannot draw his attraction toward you; you are drawn into it, you allow it. If you try to resist, or if you pull too hard, you will not perceive him.
