rosabelle's ability
as we know, Rosabelle's ability do "deaden her mind" is called Voluntary Suspended Animation, in which the body slows down metabolism, cellular working and vital signs. in Rosabelle, we see this happening in a whole different level: she actually does it voluntarily. okay, that's debatable, considering she doesn't actually deadens when she wants to, and more when she needs to. but let's keep that in mind. for her to be able to do that, she needs an insane amount of control over her own mind, to be able to control not only the way she reacts — like how we've seen in her sayings as "die, I tell myself" and how she appears as a dead battery to others — but also things that should be involuntary, controlled by her autonomic nervous system, and that includes heartbeat, breathing, brain waves, GI movements, blinking, etc.
she does have this insane control, she's proved it continuously over both Watch Me and Release Me.
there's a discussion going on around here for quite some time (I can try to find the link later) about James' secondary ability. that's very plausible, considering most of the characters of the original series do have more than one ability, so why not do the new characters too? Rosabelle could have an ability secondary to VSA which she doesn't know about.
and what could that ability be? hypercognition.
hypercognition is psychologically defined as the heightened ability to monitor and manage your own thinking, including self-monitoring, self-regulation and knowledge synthesis and application. there are scientists conducting researches on the subject as I speak, so it isn't a largely known point in psychology yet, though we can hope for more information in the coming years.
in fiction, especially dystopian or futuristic books, we often see this presented as the ability to work as a human supercomputer, in which the character has the heightened ability to process complex information quickly, learn new things instantly, and perform knowledges beyond normal human capability, including enhanced thought process, hyper-awareness and something called mind/memory palace (capability to storage and organize countless information in separated parts of their minds). that brings me to the point of Rosabelle's mind. throughout the books, we've seen she's hyperaware of both her mind and her surroundings, she categorizes people in archives inside her head, she even has the necessary autonomy to "find a dark corner in her head and make herself small, drawing her metaphorical knees to her metaphorical chest" (quote from Release Me, chapter 25). Warner himself has recognized her capability: "Setting aside her executioner skills, she’s thus far proven her capacity for espionage, unknown chemical warfare, and cyber hacking. She nearly succeeded in stealing a military jet while under relentless fire. She’s exhibited unprecedented mental and physical fortitude not only in prison, but under interrogation and duress. Upon admission to the hospital her most recent injuries had been declared so critical the medics couldn’t believe she’d maintained consciousness until the end."
that can seem contradictory, but I'll come back to that point as soon as I'm finished with this one. I'll upload the discussion in the replies.
for hypercognition to happen in one's mind, they should be able to understand and control their brains to an insane point. Rosabelle already has the necessary neural wiring (VSA), so why couldn't she have hypercognition?
besides, it is known that overly developed minds can often struggle to understand social norms or block out external stimuli, leading to reactions similar to the ones seen in neurodiversity, which we can see in the way Rosabelle first reacted when she was out in the Waffle. also, hypercognition can make the person extremely capable to perform advanced hacking methods, understand encryption sequences and solve digital security grids — which we've seen in mainly two scenarios: Rosabelle hacking into the mini chopper when she was escaping the Ark with James in Watch Me, and when she broke into the warehouse to steal the jet in Release Me. here, we can also quote Warner's speech on Rosabelle. it should also explain why she plans on acting as the solo architect of her plan to overcome the Ark.
basically, it's an enhanced form of giftedness or high abilities (in portuguese, it's spelled AH/SD, if you want to know more).
