The Day My Tears Met Her Smile
#LDR #LOVE #PWD
We met online over a year ago, and slowly, over time, we became important to each other. We’re both dealing with our own physical challenges, she’s in a wheelchair, and I have low vision, but somehow that made our connection feel more real, not less.
Last week, I finally traveled to her place and met her. We spent three days together talking, laughing, sharing small moments that somehow felt big. We made memories in such a short time that it almost felt unreal, like life had paused just to give us that space.
But in the background, there was always this weight. Her family had already warned her that a relationship like ours would be difficult or the pain of a broken past relationship. And I could feel it slowly changing something in her. She became a little more distant, a little more careful.
On the last day, we met at a mall with her mother. I stayed with them while they shopped. I was happy just being around her, playing with her hair or pulling her cheek, but at times I felt like an outsider like I was watching something I wasn’t fully a part of.
Then came the moment that I can’t shake off.
For a few minutes, it was just the two of us with the music in the background and the Sunday evening crowd. Her mother had stepped away to get something. And suddenly, despite the noise and crowd around us, everything felt quiet and heavy. She wouldn’t look at me. I could feel that she was holding back something, maybe the same thing I was.
I didn’t even understand what I was feeling at first. But it built up so quickly.
When her mother came back and it was time to leave, something in me just broke. My eyes filled up, and I couldn’t stop it. I didn’t want to cry, not there, not like that but I couldn’t hold it in.
She saw me.
And when she left, she gave me a smile.
I don’t know how to explain it, but that smile carried so much. Pain, care, hesitation, maybe even love all mixed into one moment that lasted just a second but has stayed with me ever since.
It’s strange how tears and a smile can exist together like that and somehow make everything hurt even more.
Since that day, I’ve just been sitting with it all. The connection we have, the confusion about where this is going, and this deep concern for her and for us.
I don’t fully understand what I’m feeling.
I just know that moment broke something open in me, and I don’t know how to close it again.
