How do you get over/not believe what your pwBPD insulted you about during arguments?

Focusing on Me :redditgold:

For context, I’m no longer contact with my pwBPD.

They were an ex friend, and they insulted me during our last conversation before they blocked me everywhere. Nothing too serious, but what stuck with me was being called self-centered. “fucking stupid” was also said to me a couple times but I’m trying to not care about that one.

I’m not going to pretend like I’m a flawless saint, but I was an extreme people pleaser as someone with childhood trauma and ADHD. Throughout our friendship, I constantly let their behavior slide and it destroyed my mental health for a year. There’s countless other things I could mention, but it’s too painful to recall all of it. I tolerated so much in that friendship I’d rather never think of it again.

This morning a friend of mine (let’s call them friend B) texted me saying it’s really sweet that I’ve done research on their chronic illness to know how to keep them safe, because no one has ever done that for them. I thought to myself “I don’t think a self-centered person would do what I did, right?” and of course I didn’t do the research just to seem like a better person, I genuinely love friend B with all my heart and wanted to make sure I can support them as much as I can.

I’ve had people walk all over me for years, and I’m only starting to do something about it now. I’ve also grown so much in terms of self love and confidence! I know what I am and what I’m not. However, being called self-centered really bothered me. Felt like a stab in the gut after all what I went through. I’m trying to not let it get to me but it’s a little challenging :(
