Cats and a 13 month old
My wife and i have 2 cats that we adopted at the same time 9 years ago. 1 is lively, but gentle and kind. The other has some arthritis issues that mean extra care. She is also very kind, but does not like to be messed with while she is trying to relax or hurting a bit. Her arthritis makes it hard for her to get up in the cat tree or off the ground at all really. Our daughter turned 1 last month and has been walking since a couple weeks before our birthday. She is obsessed with the cats. Since her walking began, we have gated off a few areas. The stairs leading to the basement and the stairs leading to our bedroom upstairs. Which has limited our cats space in which she can go to be alone. She is a very large cat, large enough where any cat door we put on gates, our daughter would fit through also(Maine coon mix). So, the arthritis cat does not seek our daughter out to be aggressive, but our daughter is still learning to be gentle with her. She's mostly gentle, but when she's excited she kind of smacks. Which both my wife and i stop, then try to correct by showing her how to be gentle with the cat. But the cat has swatted her 3-4 times now and twice left a mark, not large but minor scratches.
My wife mentioned this morning, not angry at the cat or angry at all really, that if the cat can't stop swatting at her, we may have to rehome her. I don't think that's fair. The cat has lived with us for 8 years, is used to a calm environment, and has health issues. I know some people may disagree, but I think its on us to work diligently with our daughter to teach her how to act with the cat. Obviously, I dont want my daughter getting hurt, but if she is the one who is "instigating" the issue. I use quotes because shes 1. She doesnt fully understand yet. I dont think thats necessarily an issue on the cat. For the hundreds of interactions they've had over the past 5-6 weeks. 4 times isn't large, and the swatting doesnt even deter her, we have to move her away still.
So I guess im just looking for tips to help the situation with out rehoming our cat.
