MLB’s stance on penalizing players for practicing their faith
The MLB’s decision to allow Pride-themed uniforms while reportedly fining players for displaying Bible verses or expressions of their faith leaves me questioning whether I want to attend another game.
If players are free to express certain beliefs and causes, they should be equally free to express their religious beliefs. Reports that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has supported disciplinary action against players for faith-based messages raise serious concerns about fairness and equal treatment.
The First Amendment protects the free exercise of religion, and many Americans believe that people should not face punishment for publicly expressing their faith. Regardless of where someone stands politically or socially, freedom of expression should apply equally to everyone.
