Bear Defense in Glacier

Hi all! My family will be doing a week hike in glacier National. We are very excited! Obviously we all will have bear spray, along with good knowledge and forethought on bear encounters. However, I will be bringing a sidearm with me for added protection. Either Underwood hardcast 9mm, or same in .40 S&W. Which would be superior for bear defense? Thanks!
