Dentist here (run a clinic in Chandigarh) - honest info on dental implants since I see a lot of confusion from patients
The dentist here (run a clinic in Chandigarh), wanted to share some honest info on dental implants since I see a lot of confusion when patients come in for consults.
Not trying to sell anything, just figured I'd put together the stuff I wish more people knew walking in. Implants come up a lot in my day to day and most patients have either zero info or some myth they read somewhere, so here's the actual rundown.
Quick basics first, an implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone that works as an artificial tooth root. Once it heals and fuses with the bone (takes a couple months), a crown gets attached on top. Three parts total: the implant post, the connector piece (abutment), and the crown itself.
Why do people end up going this route instead of bridges or dentures, they look and function like real teeth, you get your full chewing ability back, they last decades if maintained properly, and this is the part people don't realize, they actually stop bone loss in that area. Dentures and bridges just sit on top, the bone underneath keeps shrinking over time from lack of stimulation. Implants are the only option that prevents that.
Stuff I'd genuinely tell a friend or family member to ask before committing to a clinic:
How experienced is the dentist specifically with implants, not just general dentistry. It's a different skill set and the case volume matters.
What imaging are they using? A proper 3D scan (CBCT) before placement gives way more precision than relying on flat x-rays alone. If a clinic skips this step I'd be cautious.
What implant brand/system are they placing? There's a real gap between systems with decades of research backing them and cheaper alternatives, and it actually affects long term success rates.
Can you see real reviews or before/after cases.
What's their sterilization protocol like? Should be a non issue but worth a direct question.
Before getting it done, also ask: am I actually a good candidate (bone density matters), what's actually included in the cost quote (sometimes the cheap quote doesn't include the crown or follow ups), what's the realistic success rate for my case, and will I need bone grafting first.
On cost, it varies a lot based on brand, number of implants needed, grafting requirements, and crown material. I'd be careful about choosing purely on price since this is something going into your jawbone for years. Cheapest quote sometimes means cheaper implant brand or skipped imaging, and that's where problems show up later.
Recovery is honestly smoother than most people expect. Some swelling for a couple days, soft foods for about a week, and then a couple months of healing before the crown goes on. The actual placement procedure itself is usually under an hour.
A few myths that come up constantly and I'll just clear up here, it's not painful (local anesthesia, you mostly feel pressure not pain), it's not just for older patients, it doesn't need any special maintenance beyond normal brushing and flossing, and failure rates are low when it's done properly with good imaging and the right candidate selection.
Happy to answer questions if anyone's currently considering this and wants a second opinion on what to actually look for before picking a clinic. Curious too if anyone here has had a good or bad experience with implants, what made the difference for you?
