Opinions on owning two laptops?

Hello. I am a graduate going into my first year of uni, and planning on buying a device specifically for school. The only issue is that I already own a laptop—however a gaming one—that is firstly inconvenient on the go and has secondly seen a deal of problems within the short past two years of owning it. Apart from it being heavy and the battery going down faster than most, it doesn’t feel safe outside of my home.

I am looking into either an iPad or a MacBook Neo and see more sense in the latter apart from the fact I already own a laptop. Is it a smart decision going for the laptop rather than the iPad? I know some people own laptops for separate areas of their life, but I worry that buying a new one might put my current one to waste.
