I've been renting since 18 and just found out my payments can build my credit
My rent is finally doing something other than leaving my bank account every month!
Payment history is the biggest factor in your credit score. Like 35% of it. And rent is probably the biggest payment most of us make every month. So the fact that it just disappears every month without counting toward anything always felt like a design flaw to me.
If your rent is $1,600 a month, that’s $19,200 a year of on-time payments that your credit score currently has no idea about. With rent reporting turned on, every single one of those payments starts counting.
What rent reporting does is make those payments visible. Every month you pay on time, it shows up as a positive mark. Over time that builds payment history, which is exactly what your score is looking at. If you have a thin credit file it can move things faster. If you already have a lot of history it still adds to it.
Setting it up took about five minutes. Your landlord doesn't have to do anything. You can find it in the Credit Hub in the app and set it up all on your own.
It’s not going to transform your score overnight. But if you’re renting and not already doing this, you’re leaving credit history on the table every single month.
