My [21F] boyfriend [20M] is a bum and it's bothering me

(English isn't my first language)

I wanna start this off by saying that this is my first serious relationship. I don't have a point of reference as to how a relationship should look so i need unbiased advice. Me and my boyfriend (20F) have been together for a year and we are, for the most part, happy. He's not argumentative, very understanding, not insecure. But i have two major problems with him that almost caused me to end our relationship First of all, he's kind of a bum. He didn't pass his freshman year of college (found out in september 2025) due to his own laziness and it was too late to quickly enroll in a different one (common in my country). So for almost a year now he hasn't been a college student, which is a temporary thing, but... he's not doing much else. He wakes up around 1pm every day. He got a job in november that he got fired from around january. Now, five months later, he got a different one that he's not doing well in and i think he's about to get fired again. I geniunely can't imagine him holding down a job at this moment. He's never had to before. I know he's going back to college soon and i'm looking at him through the lens of his unplanned gap year. But my god, it gets to a point. Him not having a job means we barely ever go on dates. And i don't mean that as, he should pay for me, i mean it as, he can't even afford to pay for himself. He's not using all that free time for many productive things either. He's a photograph but he doesn't do much in that direction. But my main issue is that he's not a verbally romantic person. And when i say that i mean that outside of ,,i love yous" i never hear anything romantic from him outside of shallow compliments every once in a while. It's been a point of contention between us many times. It always goes like this, i tell him that he's not verbally romantic at all, he accepts that, apologizes, says he'll try harder, for two weeks he compliments me sometimes and then it goes back to point A. We went through these motions like five times now. I understand that not everyones love language is the same, but i geniunely feel like my expectations for him are extremely low and if he wanted to he could. A few days ago we had our first anniversary. We bought each other presents we both previously agreed on, had storebought pizza at his house and watched avengers. It was fine. It was cute. But i thought that for our first anniversary he would finally make an effort to prepare something cute to say. Literally anything. And he didn't. I don't even know what im expecting atp. What makes it all even more annoying is that verbal affection from him often comes in a form of instagram reels humor. Idk if you guys know what it means and i feel too embarrased to type out specific examples😭. And he can't take moments of affection that i initiate seriously either. I geniunely think that his brain is so fried by short form post ironic meme content that the sincerity of a cute moment between two partners is too much for him. Like his face is going to melt off. The thing is that he's not doing anything offensive, which makes it hard for me to end it. I almost did in may but we talked and agreed on a ,,trial month" to see if our differences can't be reconciled (looking back it was pointless). It ended on the day of our anniversary. We didn't end things but i can't honestly say anything changed. He has some great qualities as a boyfriend. He's very supportive, he's not argumentative, he's funny and kind. But at this point i can't see myself walk down the isle with him. And in my country people still get married at our age so it's a real fear he's gonna propose. So, tell me reddit, am i delusional? Is this the best I can ask for? I sometimes feel like lady bovary, as in my idea of romance is skewed by media i consume. Idk.

TLDR: i love my boyfriend but he's unambitious and not verbally romantic at all.
