Gave the blood for beta HcG test, got period as soon as I reached home

Feeling very sad! Me and my husband are trying to get pregnant for almost 6 months, not active in all the months because of some family emergencies. This cycle I tracked my ovulation with clearblue digital ovulation kit, got solid smiley on the kit, also had egg white mucus the same day. We had sex the same day that is the only day we had sex in that cycle. After that I got all the symptoms: body ache, soar breast, brown discharge, fatigue. Got a faint positive on clearblue early test and then waited 4 days after the missed period to go for blood work and then got my periods. Am I not tracking the ovulation correctly? Is there something more I can check along with the kit to make sure we have the right timing?
