Failing hard drive?

Recently purchased a modded xbox with replaced caps and a hard drive.

Some games and even the XBMC dashboard sometimes seem too slow to launch - is this something normal for the OG xbox?

If it is a failing drive, could anyone point me in the right direction to upgrade/replace it ?
