AITA for posting a joke "confession" about my ex's best friend, which ended up getting me dumped?
I (20F) was dating a girl I'll call Charlotte (20F). We met through a Discord server made for queer people from our region/state. I casually posted asking people "what's your celebrity crush? I'll rate them 1-10," and she replied with hers. We instantly started talking ,abt TV shows, future plans, basically all the usual getting-to-know-you questions. There was an instant connection. She was the first queer woman I've ever dated, a lot of our ideologies matched, and honestly she's one of the sweetest, most lovely people I've ever met. I didn't slide into her DMs trying to flirt or date her, but with how intense the connection was, we ended up liking each other and she asked me out.
Important backstory: Charlotte has a best friend / ex-girlfriend I'll call Nancy, who is SO fun to be around. Before I even talked to Charlotte, I'd slid into Nancy's DMs because of her charming personality, and I might've flirted a little unintentionally ,she's bold, unhinged in the best way, cracks jokes, doesn't take herself too seriously. But the more we talked, the more "bro" vibes I got. Now I genuinely see her as a younger sister, nothing else.
So our Discord server added a confession feature where people post unhinged thoughts/opinions/confessions anonymously. I woke up feeling adventurous one day because the server had been pretty dry for a while. A few days earlier, someone had posted "I have a crush on ______" and the whole server spent ages trying to guess who wrote it. I thought it'd be funny to recreate that chaos using Nancy's name, since she and I rage-bait and pull each other's legs constantly anyway. So I posted "I have a huge crush on Nancy.
"Within minutes someone commented "lol it's obviously Patricia" (fake name). I panicked a little like , am I really that predictable?? I immediately texted Charlotte to let her know it was me, expecting her to just laugh about it like we usually do.
Instead she said: "go on a date with Nancy then."
I was like??? "but I like YOU," "you're the person I actually connected with!!" At first I thought she was just being dramatic/joking, but after clarifying multiple times that I see Nancy purely as a friend/sister, she made it clear she was dead serious. She said "I don't see myself dating a person who treats this like a joke," and that was that broken up.
I was heartbroken. Like genuinely could not process how someone breaks up with you over a joke. After talking to Nancy (since she's Charlotte's best friend), it kind of clicked , Charlotte is someone who believes in true love and doesn't tolerate any kind of flirting from her partner, even joking flirting. And me, being chronically sarcastic and dipped in humor since birth, just didn't read the room. I've never cheated or actually flirted with anyone while being in a relationship, but I think she genuinely saw the confession as a sign I was into her best friend, when that was never it.
I own my mistake fully, I'm not trying to justify it. The part that hurts the most though is she didn't give me any closure , just blocked me. I could've accepted "I don't want to date you because of this," but I feel like I at least deserved that conversation instead of getting cut off completely. we could have remained frnd/acquaintances now that i k her morals but....i fucked up.
So Reddit — AITA?
