The Legend of Rosy Clouds 云秀行: Episodes 1 -3

SpoilerDrama Host

Hello folks! Welcome to the discussion group for The Legend of Rosy Clouds, which I will be co-hosting with u/not_enough_griffons, u/Alarming_Tea_102, and u/AquaphobicTurtle!

I will start with a Cantonese saying: I've been waiting for this drama to drop "so long that even my neck has elongated" lol. The drama actually finished filming back in 2023, but due to what was reportedly IP rights issue with the original author, its release was delayed. But fiiiiiiinally, it's here now!

The first 6 episodes have been released, but we decided to split the discussion into 2 threads covering 3 episodes each. 6 episodes are quite a lot to digest at once, and breaking them up should make it easier for everyone to catch up and join the discussion.

Just a quick reminder: If you're referring to specific plot points or major events from the anime or novel, please use spoiler tags. There's always a chance those events may appear in the drama, and we would like to avoid spoiling first-time viewers.

The Backstory:

In a remote southeastern corner of the realm, disasters struck year after year, leaving the common people in constant hardship. During this turbulent period, a brave and wise hero named Qi Hua emerged. With the support of the Nine Great Families, including the Qi, Zheng, Fan, and Wei clans, he brought stability to the region and ushered in an era of prosperity.

However, thirteen years ago, Qi Hua fell gravely ill, and his heirs descended into a bloody struggle for the position of City Lord. The Nine Great Families intervened in an attempt to restore order, but the conflict came at a terrible cost. After heavy casualties, only the youngest heir, Qi Zheng, remained. He ultimately inherited the position and became the region's current governor.

Note: There really isn't a whole lot happening in the first three episodes, so I'll give you folks the CliffsNotes version of the plot before moving on to some character analysis.

The Plot So Far:

We are introduced to Fan Yun, a young noblewoman from the Fan clan. Although she hails from one of the Nine Great Families, she lives in near poverty with her father, Fan Qi, and her adopted brother, Gao Ran.

Hoping to steer the current City Lord onto the right path, the Three Elders of the Nine Cities decide to find a virtuous wife for Qi Zheng. They offer Fan Yun a handsome sum of 500 taels to take on the role, an offer she simply cannot refuse.

Unfortunately, things do not get off to a promising start. Qi Zheng fails to appear on their wedding night and continues to avoid Fan Yun for several days afterward. Through her maidservant, Su Yin, Fan Yun learns that the City Lord leads an overly carefree lifestyle, spending his days drinking, fighting crickets, and playing Blind Man's Buff rather than attending to matters of governance.

Fortunately for Fan Yun, fate soon intervenes. One day, while picking flowers from a tree, she has her first encounter with Qi Zheng. And yes, it's exactly the kind of fateful first meeting you would expect from a costume drama, complete with slow-motion shots and flower petals swirling romantically through the air 🙄🙄🙄

Qi Zheng, however, remains distant even after their fateful first meeting. Determined to fulfill the task entrusted to her, Fan Yun resorts to staging an escape from the residence in order to pique his interest and lure him into exploring the city with her. Her hope is to show him firsthand how ordinary people live and, perhaps, inspire him to become a more responsible City Lord. Unfortunately, Qi Zheng stays true to his carefree reputation and remains largely oblivious to Fan Yun's efforts.

Lou Qiyan

During their outing, they visit Huan'e House, the most popular tavern in the city, where they encounter Lou Qiyan, the owner of Juyun Pavilion, for the first time. Qi Zheng quickly grows suspicious of Lou Qiyan's identity after noticing that his clothing is made from fabrics typically reserved for the nobility.

To investigate further, Qi Zheng persuades Fan Yun to help him. After bribing her, he has her impersonate Hu Die, the owner of Huan'e House, so that she can secretly cut a piece of fabric from Lou Qiyan's robe. Fan Yun nearly gets caught in the act, but manages to escape with Qi Zheng before her cover is blown.

Qi Zheng's suspicions are later confirmed as Lou Qiyan is revealed to be Zheng Shi, the grandson of Lord Zheng Yuan, one of the Three Elders.

However, Qi Zheng too has a secret of his own. Far from being the idle ruler everyone believes him to be, he is actually the true owner of Huan'e House. Hu Die is his trusted subordinate, who gathers intelligence on the city's nobles and influential figures through an extensive information network.

During their conversation, the pair discuss Dark Wolf, a secret organization founded by Qi Zheng's father that answers only to the holder of the Dark Wolf Seal. Qi Zheng suspects someone within the Fan residence may be connected to Dark Wolf, because, he had deliberately pretended to be drunk the night before so that he could snoop around and conduct a little investigation of his own.

Meanwhile, under the pretense of presenting a gift of fine liquor for Qi Zheng's upcoming birthday banquet, Lou Qiyan aka Zheng Shi, successfully contrives a reason to enter Huiyun Pavilion.

The birthday banquet also brings representatives from several prominent clans to the city. Among them are the Wei siblings, Wei Rong and Wei Shisan. Their elder brother, Wei Ying, serves as Commander of the Left Guardian Corps.

Officially, the Wei siblings' visit is intended to introduce Wei Shisan as a prospective bride for Qi Zheng. As is often the case in dramas, however, things do not go according to plan. Instead of falling for the City Lord, Wei Shisan promptly develops feelings for Gao Ran, Fan Yun's adopted brother and the current Head of the Guardian Corps whom she deems to be the most handsome gentleman she has ever met. I'm generally not a fan of overly dramatic, slow-motion first meetings, but this one was so ridiculously over-the-top that it turned hilarious.

Curious about why Qi Zheng seems so reluctant to celebrate his own birthday, Fan Yun prepares a bowl of pig trotter noodle soup for him after getting some intel from Yan Jiang. The gesture immediately reminds Qi Zheng of his childhood, when his beloved second brother used to make the same dish for him. Touched by Fan Yun's thoughtfulness, he finally asks her where her loyalties lie.

Satisfied with Fan Yun's answer and reassured by her impartiality, Qi Zheng declares that from this day forward, she is his person.

https://preview.redd.it/00jqvu1rij8h1.png?width=1015&format=png&auto=webp&s=7a254ec5cfe84476ddec52abe26d4516ec80c552

Meanwhile, Lord Zheng Yuan grows increasingly dissatisfied with Fan Yun because Qi Zheng no longer seems content to remain a puppet ruler and has even begun discussing reforms. Concerned by Fan Yun's influence over him, Lord Zheng Yuan gives her a not-so-subtle warning about interfering in state affairs.

https://preview.redd.it/bsr1mcwwij8h1.png?width=1009&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed87d95eaf9333b50637f1d5d435f9f49f49476f

When Fan Yun remains somewhat defiant, Lord Zheng Yuan leaves, but not before secretly instructing Su Yin to eliminate her. Acting on order, Su Yin poisons a jug of wine, an act that is witnessed by Lou Qiyan (seriously, who on earth leaves the door open while poisoning wine?)

Qi Zheng's show of excessive affections gave me shades of Xia Hou Dan hahaahah

During the birthday banquet, Lou Qiyan spots Fan Yun and recognizes her as the woman who previously impersonated Hu Die. By this point, Qi Zheng and Fan Yun are working together as allies, and the pair deliberately put on a show of excessive affection in public to mislead the Three Elders into lowering their guard. As the festivities unfold, a maidservant enters carrying the poisoned wine.

Character Analysis:

Qi Zheng, the current City Lord

https://preview.redd.it/e5w7yvcrlj8h1.jpg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=339002d21b2a6f1573fe8a2f0876e7b67bdb4e36

The current City Lord and the sole survivor of a bloody succession struggle among his siblings following his father's illness. On the surface, Qi Zheng appears to lead a carefree, somewhat hedonistic lifestyle, spending his days drinking, playing games, and avoiding his responsibilities. In reality, however, he is far more cunning, perceptive, and calculating than he lets on. Given his age, it seems likely that he inherited the position of City Lord while still quite young, with the Three Elders acting as regents in his stead. Now that he has come of age, Qi Zheng is quietly maneuvering to reclaim genuine authority, as he is currently little more than a ruler in name.

One example of Qi Zheng's political savvy can be seen when Zheng Yuan proposes raising taxes to replenish the treasury. Instead of confronting the Three Elders head-on, Qi Zheng deftly redirects the issue by claiming that the reform was Fan Yun's idea. Because Fan Yun was handpicked by the Three Elders to be his bride, any criticism of the proposal effectively becomes criticism of their own judgment. It is a clever move that allows Qi Zheng to turn the tables on them while keeping his own hands clean.

Qi Zheng is initially wary of Fan Yun because she was chosen by the Three Elders to become his bride. Although he appears to lower his guard after she cooks him a bowl of pig trotter noodles, a dish that reminds him of his beloved second brother, I don't think he truly regards her as a trusted ally yet, despite declaring her to be "his person."

https://preview.redd.it/nnnm0wop0k8h1.png?width=1009&format=png&auto=webp&s=dc94d785a93a7819a716e36914c44549f40c91e6

The flashbacks reveal that the only person Qi Zheng genuinely relied upon was his second brother, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Having grown up in an environment where betrayal, manipulation, and political scheming were commonplace, it would make sense for Qi Zheng to be extremely guarded when it comes to trust. At this stage, Fan Yun is likely still more of a useful piece on the board than someone he wholeheartedly confides in.

Personally, I would prefer it if Qi Zheng does not fully trust Fan Yun just yet, let alone develop romantic feelings for her. Given his upbringing and the trauma of the succession struggle, his trust should be difficult to earn. A gradual progression from suspicion to respect, and eventually affection would feel far more believable..

Fan Yun

Fan Yun is a noblewoman in name only, because although she is part of the Fan clan, her family possesses little wealth beyond their ancestral manor, which has clearly seen better days. Our Fan Yun is highly motivated by financial incentives and is willing to go to great lengths if the reward is substantial enough. But her obsession with money is not driven by personal greed. Fan Yun is just constantly looking for ways to support the local school where she teaches the local kids.

https://preview.redd.it/jtxpb1ck2k8h1.png?width=1008&format=png&auto=webp&s=c2f45df712c8dbc1a2efad6c35f0b1fa386063e8

She also possesses a genuine concern for the welfare of ordinary people and harbors a quiet dream of serving the common people in an official capacity. Her sincerity and compassion are evident even to Qi Zheng, who initially regards her with suspicion.

One thing I like about Fan Yun is that she isn't afraid to be a little opportunistic when money is involved e.g. happily earning commissions by bringing Qi Zheng to various shops around the city. But she does have a strong moral compass despite her money-minded tendencies, like solemnly promising to repay Qi Zheng because she knows she is taking advantage of his wealth.

https://preview.redd.it/zavgowtw2k8h1.jpg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f8b608e6f3f374fd269a7d0064e7554fe4e58f2

Fan Yun may be petite and easily underestimated by others, especially in a society where women are expected to remain in the background, but she possesses plenty of backbone. For instance, she refuses to back down simply because powerful men like Lord Zheng Yuan believe a woman should know her place. I love that instead of responding with emotion, she counters his arguments with logic and reason.

Fan Yun also shows an early aptitude for navigating political intrigue. When the Three Elders each send her gifts of clothing, Fan Yun cleverly avoids appearing aligned with any of them and shows impartiality by wearing garments from all three households.

Lou Qiyan/Zheng Shi

Which version of Deng Wei would you prefer? I know which one I would pick hahahaha

Zheng Shi is Zheng Yuan's grandson, who has recently returned from Jingcheng and resumed his studies in Ling'an. On the surface, he is everything one would expect from a noble young master: respectful, diligent, well-mannered, and highly educated.

However, our scholarly young man also has an alter ego in the form of Lou Qiyan, the owner of Juyun Pavilion. It's almost as if the two identities have split personalities, right down to the clothes they wear. As Zheng Shi, he looks every bit the refined heir of an aristocratic family, dressed in elegant white and cream robes that emphasize his gentle and scholarly demeanor. As Lou Qiyan, however, the dark robes, loose hair, and beard transform him into someone far more intimidating and enigmatic.

Okay, I have to ask: I can't be the only one who keeps seeing Sinbad whenever Lou Qiyan appears on screen. No? Just me? Alright then...

Since I much prefer Deng Wei's Lou Qiyan persona, I'll be referring to him as Lou Qiyan for the rest of this post, even though his true identity is Zheng Shi hahah

Lou Qiyan's motives remain unclear for now. Why a noble young master would cultivate a second identity as a powerful merchant with considerable influence over the city's economy is anyone's guess. Whatever his ultimate objective may be, it's obvious that this wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. The amount of planning involved suggests he began laying the groundwork for this double life long before he ever arrived in Ling'an. Zheng Yuan appears completely unaware of his grandson's alter ego, and I wonder if Lou Qiyan hired a doppelgänger to attend classes in his place. The man somehow finds time to wander around the city, manage a major business enterprise, engage in secret scheming, and still maintain the reputation of a scholar lol.

First Impression:

The first 3 episodes are largely devoted to introducing the characters and setting up the world, so I can understand why some people may find the plot rather thin at this stage.

https://reddit.com/link/1ubftjl/video/3glnm0w03k8h1/player

The drama can also come across as a little silly, with a much stronger comedic tone than some fans of the novel or anime adaptation may have expected. There are plenty of light-hearted moments in both the novel and the anime, but they are balanced with more serious scenes. I'm hoping the future episodes will dial back the comedy a little

As someone who is also a fan of the anime, I have long accepted that the drama would make significant changes to both the storyline and the characters, so I have chosen to watch it with very little expectations that it will closely follow the source material.

I do think the pace will pick up considerably in the coming episodes, especially now that most of the major players have been introduced, so I would encourage people to stick around for a bit longer before making a final judgment.

My biggest gripe so far is the dubbing. The lip-sync feels noticeably off at times, and some of the voices sound a little unnatural, which can be distracting during certain scenes. I believe Tian Jia Rui and Deng Wei dubbed themselves, though I'm not entirely sure about the rest of the cast.

Another issue I have is the sound effects. At times, it feels a little too whimsical and cartoonish, almost like watchin an anime. While I understand that the production is probably trying to capture the lighthearted charm of the source material, something about the execution feels a little off to me.

I also feel that the overall production value is on the lower side e.g. the costumes and some of the wigs lol. But it's not something that significantly affects my enjoyment of the series.

Major Settings:

Ling'an CityThe region governed by Qi Zheng. I'm actually not clear whether the city featured in the drama is the central city of the Nine Cities or whether "Nine Cities" refers to the city itself.
Huan'e HouseThe most popular tavern in the city. Secretly owned by Qi Zheng and used as an intelligence-gathering hub.
Huiyun PavilionQi Zheng's official residence
Juyun PavilionLou Qiyan's merchant house. Its business activities have negatively affected the West Market, which is frequented by commoners, in contrast to the East Market, which primarily caters to the nobility.
Qilin PavilionThe city library managed by Fan Qi, Fan Yun's father
