Pets/ expositions

So I know normal pets can only level up to 5 but what kind of pet rarity or whatever can level up the highest so I know what to trade up to or potentially buy depending on pricing. I want to get a pet I can work with in leveling up so I can send them on expos. Any help is appreciated!
