Hosting someone on exchange
Hi there!
I'm an Australian teacher and I've just found out I'll be hosting a young lady from Japan who will be working at our school for a month as a Japanese language assistant. I'm unsure whether she's fully qualified or if this is part of her University degree, I believe she's in her twenties, if it matters at all.
She will be staying for 1 month, and working every week day, Monday-Friday.
I just wanted to know how best to accommodate her.
Is there anyone here who has done the same thing? What sort of things do you wish your host families had known? The work can be pretty tough, so would it be better to let her rest over the weekends or take her places so she can enjoy Australia while she's here? I don't want to put too much pressure on her to always be doing something but I don't want her to feel disappointed she didn't get to see much, so I'd love to hear from people who were in a similar situation.
I think beach might be out since it's winter, but are there any other Australian experiences people in Japan think of when they think of Australia that I should provide for her?
Apparently she doesn't have too much English, are there any phrases I should learn to make living together better? All the things I've found online are more tourist-focused, such as asking where restaurants are and how much things are.
I'd just love whatever advice anyone can give me, even simple things like what time meals happen in Japan, and what sort of foods I could prepare (a month of just Aussie food might get a bit much, everyone likes something familiar sometimes). Or what sort of things I should supply that I might not have considered.
I'm not really sure what else I can ask! It was all sort of very last minute, as her previous host family that was lined up, backed out at the last minute. I guess I just want to make sure she's as comfortable and happy as possible while in our home. So absolutely any tips at all would be amazing!
