Where do I start?

Hi,

Here's the question. For a person who has never played golf, how do you even begin? I am especially interested to hear from people who pick it up as adults, so it wasn't passed on as a thing to do by family. Do you rent your gear or bring your own? How do you improve if you don't have a field near?
