Why do we do this to ourselves?

If porn is anything to go off of, incest is by far one of the most popular kinks out there (at least online). There are innumerable psychological explanations for why someone might be into it, such as coping with trauma or simply wanting to indulge in something taboo, so it’s not some big mystery. Furthermore, as has been established by almost every kink community far and wide, fetishes are not indicators of a person’s moral character. I myself have been into incest for almost as long as I’ve been looking at porn, and yet I have never felt even a single iota of attraction toward any of my actual family members (related by blood or by law), let alone felt the urge to slake such desires by violating them. Indulging in incest-centric fantasies should be as much of a non-issue as doing so for any other kink.

And yet, it is one of the most difficult topics to even broach in most NSFW spaces.

On paper, it makes sense; trauma relating to or resulting from actual incest is all too common, and I would never want anyone to feel as though I am fetishizing their painful memories. If that’s the case, though, then why is a simple content warning enough for most other popular “dark” kinks (CNC, monsterfucking, etc.) to get a pass? Why is incest so often counted among the “untouchables” of the kink world (piss, scat, blood, etc.), relegated to only being openly discussed in spaces specifically designed for it, when it clearly has a much more wide-reaching appeal than most of the others? Why has the porn industry, in spite of its usual shamelessness, chosen to kowtow to a vocal minority and wrap nearly all professionally-shot incest content in the ridiculous (and often profoundly unsexy) facade of stepcest?

It’s not just in “normie” spaces, either. For the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of being a part of the online erotic audio community. It’s been an honor and a pleasure to be among such intelligent, open-minded writers, voice actors, and other creatives who are all too willing to help each other embrace their inner freak (I can personally attest that they’ve definitely assisted me in this matter). However, even among these lovely people, I seldom ever hear a peep of real discussion about incest fantasies. Incest audio content is often both popular and successful, and those in these spaces seldom shy away from talking about taboo topics. Even so, there are typically only occasional whispers of incest as people test the waters, sending out half-hearted invitations to fellow incest content lovers before receding back into the shadows.

For my part, I’m over it. I’m tired of all this posturing and pretending over something that should not matter. It’s such a small thing, and that’s precisely why it pisses me off. This shouldn’t be anything that anyone pays any mind, and yet this is somehow the arbitrary line in the sand we’ve chosen to draw. We torture ourselves enough with our societal sexual dysfunction as it is, so we don’t need the additional thorn in our side of making it so hard to even talk about such a popular fantasy. Let’s talk about slow-burn, psychologically-heavy stories of people mustering up the courage to break what is widely considered to be one of the greatest taboos. Let’s talk about fictional consenting adults engaging in forbidden love and lust without entertaining discussions of whether it’s possible for any real person to actually consent to incest because fuck it, it’s all fantasy, anyway. Let’s talk about made-up family trees, mangled by generations of inbreeding as each new generation comes of age and is introduced to their family’s way of life, but without a single mention of the horrific defects that would occur in real life because it’s just hotter that way. Let’s talk about kinky family dynamics, whether it’s a daughter having secret trysts with her father behind his narcissistic wife’s back, a son who puts his mother on a leash behind closed doors, or a whole family who participates in at-home nudism and free use every single day. Let’s talk about scenarios where incest is a dirty little secret to be snuck around for after mom and dad have gone to sleep or in some isolated bathroom where someone could hear if they’re not careful. Let’s talk about hypothetical societies where it’s so common and accepted that people do it openly in public without fear of reprisal, the act being treated as casually as grabbing a bite to eat. Let’s talk about family structures shaped by generational incest that blur the lines between typical familial roles. Let’s talk about incest being used as a kind of sexual ritual to perform sacred rites or as parts of spells. Let’s talk about all manner of settings, be they historical, contemporary, or futuristic, just to see how we could incorporate incest into them. Let’s talk about other intelligent species from fantasy or science fiction and how incest could be part of their cultures. Let’s talk about incest til the cows come home, society be damned. Fuck ‘em.
