Does anyone else actually enjoy being bored anymore?
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how rare true boredom has become.
We live in an age of constant optimization. Every spare minutestanding in line, waiting for a bus, sitting in the doctor's office—is immediately filled with podcasts, emails, or scrolling through feeds. We’ve become terrified of having even thirty seconds where we aren't "consuming" something.
But honestly? I think we’re losing something valuable.
I tried "unplugging" for a while todayno music, no phone, no screensjust sitting there. At first, it was agonizing. But about ten minutes in, my brain stopped feeling "itchy" and actually started to settle. I felt like I was finally catching up to my own thoughts for the first time in weeks.
I feel like we’ve traded genuine creativity and peace for constant, low-grade dopamine hits.
Does anyone else intentionally try to be bored, or do you feel like you have to be doing something at all times? How do you handle the urge to just reach for your phone the second things get quiet?
