Struggling with UE 5.8’s experimental MCP? We built an open-source alternative that works perfectly on 5.8, and retroactively from 5.4 to 5.7.
Hey everyone,
I've been seeing a lot of discussion and frustration lately around Unreal Engine 5.8's new experimental MCP (Model Context Protocol). A lot of people are struggling to figure out the available toolsets, dealing with missing/incomplete APIs, and trying to get AI agents to actually understand their editor context.
If you’re trying to drive Unreal Engine with AI (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) and hitting a wall, I wanted to share something we've been building that solves this today.
Meet VERA (Virtual Engine Reasoning Agent).
We built an open-source MCP server and fully agentic AI co-pilot that lives directly inside the Unreal Editor. The curious thing? It works perfectly for Unreal 5.8... but it also works for UE 5.4 through 5.7.
Obviously, versions 5.4 to 5.7 don't have Epic's native 5.8 plugins, so VERA brings its own robust architecture. Out of the box, VERA comes bundled with 10 powerful plugins (including Blueprint Forge, PCG Forge, Scene Vibe, Source Control, and more). Plus, it's incredibly easy to write your own custom tools in Python!
Here is how VERA bypasses the current MCP headaches:
- 🛠️ 10 Built-in Toolsets & Extensible Plugins: You don't have to guess what the AI can do. VERA has a clear set of 10 built-in plugins and base tools (
ue_exec,ue_screenshot, etc.). Need more? Just write a simple Python script to create your own tools. - 🔌 Offers its own MCP Server: VERA runs its own Model Context Protocol server. This means you can connect it directly to your favorite IDE (Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, JetBrains) or console to drive Unreal Engine exactly how you want.
- 👁️ It Actually Sees the Editor: VERA isn't just blind text generation. It can render the viewport, capture specific actors, and feed the image back to the LLM to verify its own work.
- 🧠 Bring Your Own Brain (OpenAI Standard): It speaks the standard OpenAI
/v1API. Works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or 100% offline local models (Ollama, LM Studio). - 💸 100% Free & Open Source: MIT Licensed. No paywalls, no studio lock-in.
- 🛒 Coming Soon to Fab: We are currently preparing our release, so you'll soon be able to grab VERA directly from Epic's new Fab marketplace!
