Boss's health is uncertain. Do I accept a new job offer or not?

Need opinions on leaving my job or not.

I 've been working at a big hospital for 4 years now. My contracts are getting renewed based on the funding my boss receives (usually it's between 6months and 10months contracts). Recently, my boss' health has deteriorated and he will need to step down at some point (which he does not reveal for obvious reasons-he is a university prof-the academic community is brutal). If he goes, then I go as well... my job is being his assistant/secretary. He respects me and trusts me implicitly and so far, my salary is quite good. I have parking priviledges, my leave time is excellent, access to docτορs and medical services when I need it and did I mention that my job is a 10 min drive from my home? Yes, indeed. I am excellent at my job, I literally created it from scratch and I have created a good name for myself.

That being said, if my boss steps down or knock on wood passes away, I am completely jobless. Yesterday, I received a job offer as a civil servant... sort of (an office job). The salary is almost quite good-perhaps a bit less (like a 100 bucks less). Α 2 year contract with possibility of renewal. A 35 min drive from home, parking perhaps included, leave time-the minimum I can get. The nature of the job, probably at the human resources office of the regional health authority of my city.

The job offer was quite unexpected and so now I am afraid to leave my current job and terrified to accept the new one. My family (I'm single with no kids but I live close to my parents) wants me to do what's best for me but they are insinuating that staying where I am is better for me at my age (49 years old). My best friend tells me to take the security of a 2 year contract with a steady salary and the highly possible yearly renewal.

I have to speak with my boss about it and I'm dreading the talk already but it needs to be done and the new job people are pushing me to answer in the next couple of days because they need people.

What do I do?
