I want to preface this by saying that I’m genuinely grateful we live in a time where we’re getting such high quality figures, both official and third party. It’s a great time to be a collector. And this rant is specifically about head and face sculpts.

Tamashii sucks at making heads and faces.

I’m actually a big fan of the new engineering with the 4.0 bodies. It’s cool that they’re trying to innovate with softer plastics, dynamic shoulder tech, and all that. But official SHF Dragon Ball figures specifically have some of the goofiest looking faces out of any line. For an IP with this much fandom, source material, and references to pull from, it baffles me how bad some of these face designs can be.

I understand that niche characters might not be as lucrative, but after making 300 Gokus, you’d think they would have nailed the face by now. I bought the DKO Last Duel pack, and it’s literally better than every single Goku head Tamashii has ever made. How can a 3rd party company produce better tooled, better painted, and more accurate heads than a company with all of Tamashii’s resources?

At this point, I’m basically paying Tamashii for the body and waiting for third party companies to make the definitive heads so I can finally have a complete figure. This Nono Custom recast of a TK head (a bootleg of a bootleg) is better than any Ultra Instinct head Tamashii has ever made.

I genuinely cannot comprehend why they wouldn’t put more effort into the heads and faces. Please make it make sense 😭

(The SS4 Vegeta head sculpt is peak)

Why doesn’t Tamashii fix this?
