I've been on Mounjaro for 8 months and I've lost 12% of my body weight
I've been comparing my progress to the SURMOUNT-1 trial data and feeling a little disappointed. The trial participants lost around 20% of their body weight at 72 weeks. I'm at 12% at 8 months. But a new study published in Obesity explains why real-world results almost never match clinical trial data. The researchers analyzed data from over 45,000 patients on GLP-1s and found that the average weight loss in real-world settings is about 30-40% less than what's reported in clinical trials. The reasons are probably what we already suspected: trial participants get regular check-ins, free medication, and intensive lifestyle support. In the real world, we're on our own with insurance headaches and limited doctor access.
The study also found that the gap is widest for people with lower adherence (people who miss doses or stop early). Those who stayed on the medication consistently had results much closer to the trial averages. This actually made me feel better. I'm not failing, I'm just normal.
