Sabir Al-Ametel, 21 years old from the Naqab, died on Friday, June 19, after two weeks hospitalized in critical condition following his discovery unconscious in his cell at Shikma detention facility. The occupation claimed he attempted suicide. His family and lawyers reject the claim entirely, pointing to severe bruises and injuries covering his body as evidence of torture.

Al-Ametel was arrested on June 4, 2026 on 'israeli' claims of weapons smuggling. He was interrogated by 'Israeli' Shabak and denied access to a lawyer throughout his detention. When brought before a judge the day after his arrest, he told the court his health was good. The judge approved extending his detention until June 11.

On June 7, he was found unconscious in his cell and transported to Barzel Hospital in 'ashkelon' in critical condition. He was released from detention during his hospitalization and died Friday, June 19. His death was announced Sunday, June 21.

His father spoke directly about what he witnessed: "They took from me a healthy son and returned him a corpse. Sabir did not commit suicide. I want to see the camera footage to know what actually happened."

The family's lawyers met with Al-Ametel in the hospital on June 8 and documented what they observed. Both lawyers confirmed they witnessed "severe bruises and injuries" covering his body. The Prisoners' Media Office stated that Al-Ametel was subjected to brutal arrest and violent assault, and had no health conditions before his detention.

The family has demanded access to surveillance camera recordings, shift logs, and medical documents related to the incident. Both Shabak and the 'Israel' Prison Service refused these requests, claiming he was no longer in their custody after being transferred to the hospital. The family filed an urgent petition with the Central Court demanding a judicial investigation into the causes of death, citing "a real possibility of exceptional circumstances" surrounding his death that warrant immediate investigation.

Hanazla Center for Prisoners and Freed Prisoners mourned Al-Ametel's death as another crime added to the systematic abuse record of Palestinian prisoners. The Center stated that his death confirms the continuation of slow-death policies, medical negligence, and systematic torture against prisoners. With Al-Ametel's death, the number of known prisoners killed since October 7, 2023 rises to 91. Since 1967, the total number of prisoners killed in 'israeli' custody reaches 328.

The Center held 'israeli' occupation authorities fully responsible for Al-Ametel's death and called on international institutions, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations, to take urgent action to stop ongoing crimes against prisoners and establish independent international investigations to hold those responsible accountable.

The Prisoners' Movement confirmed that Al-Ametel had no health problems before arrest and was healthy when taken into custody. His death represents one of the bloodiest periods for Palestinian prisoners in 'israeli' jails, characterized by unprecedented escalation in crimes committed by occupation prison authorities since October 7, 2023, amid international silence and the failure of human rights institutions to stop these grave violations.
