GMs, do you write session summaries for your players? How do you handle them?
Hi everyone — I’m curious how different groups handle session summaries in longer campaigns.
In our current Cosmere campaign, our GM started sending us summaries about two days before the next session, and it has been genuinely useful. It helps everyone remember where we left off, but it has been especially helpful for players like me who didn’t know much — or anything — about the setting going in.
It made me realize that good recaps are not just “what happened last time.” They can also help players understand the world, remember important NPCs, and feel more confident jumping back into the story.
For GMs and players:
- Do you write or share a summary after every session?
- Do you send the previous summary again a few days before the next session?
- Are your recaps short bullet points, narrative summaries, shared notes, or something else?
- Who usually writes them: the GM, a player, or everyone together?
- Do players actually read them before the next game?
- What details are most useful to include: NPCs, locations, unresolved quests, character moments, lore, or decisions made?
For context, I’m part of the team building Argo, an RPG engine and campaign companion for TTRPG players and GMs. We’re exploring how session recording, transcription, summaries, and campaign journals could help groups keep better campaign history without creating more admin work.
We recently showed some of that work in a DevLog here:

I’m not trying to just drop a video and leave — I’d genuinely like to hear how people currently handle this at their own tables.
What makes a session summary actually useful for your group?
