How do you even convince a local council to let you do permeable paving in an older suburb? Is it a nightmare?

So I'm looking at redoing my driveway and actually want to do the right thing with drainage. Permeable paving seems like the obvious answer, lets water soak back into the ground instead of flooding my street. I was looking at some local installers and their work looks legit, good quality finishes.

But here's where I get nervous. I'm in an established suburb, old trees, heritage vibe. I can already picture the council giving me the runaround for months. Neighbour complained about a slightly different fence colour once and it was a whole saga.

Anyone actually gone through this approval process? Did you need engineering reports? Did the council fight you on it? Or did they actually support it because of the stormwater benefits? I don't want to get halfway through and realise I've opened a can of worms.

Give it to me straight, how much of a bureaucratic nightmare is this actually going to be?
