Need advice on crazy debit to income ratio
So I freelance as a creative director working entirely remote and earning around 1-2.5 lakhs/ month. Income ranges from project to project but a minimum of 1 lakh/ month has been consistent with good months bringing in 2-2.5 lakhs. I am 35, single, live alone on rent of 25k.
3 years ago , for god knows why, I started a franchised cafe thinking I could earn some money on the side. Horrible, horrible mistake, I know. To make it worse, within a year I started another one in Mumbai because the location was amazing. Mind you I took 2 loans to fund both of these. Worst decision. Anyway, fast forward 3 years, I took multiple smaller loans as working capital hoping both cafés will at least breakeven. While the 2nd one was showing some upward trend it still needed funds to sustain it till then which I didn’t have. So I closed the 1st one and sold the 2nd one. Basically incurred great loss.
Current snapshot:
I have a total amount of around 71 lakhs loans (total number of 12 loans) on my head. Biggest loan being 48 lakhs (loan against my property) to smallest ones being around 2 lakhs (gold loan, app loans like CRED, PayTM etc.)
Monthly cumulative EMIs come to around 2 lakhs per month.
Now, while my monthly bleeding from the cafe has stopped. I still have to pay these EMIs, rent, food, etc. basically my total expense comes to around 2.4 - 2.5 lakhs per month. But my income is not matching this every month. I’m lucky to have a very supportive family so they have helped me with some money for months where I haven’t been able to meet the expenses. But I can’t obviously can’t keep borrowing money since they too have their own expenses.
Now, before anyone calls it, I know it was utterly stupid of me to start the cafés when I was already earning a decent amount with very little relative expenses. I learnt the lesson the hard way and of course the very expensive way.
I have been trying to get a debt consolidation loan but all financials institutions (banks as well as nbfcs) have said my debt to income ratio is too high. I mean, that’s exactly why I want to consolidate my debt. It’s a weird vicious circle. If I can get a loan of 25 lakhs to consolidate some of my high interest loans, I can effectively bring down my monthly emi to 1-1-2 lakhs per month all the way from 2 lakhs per month.
I have never missed a single emi repayment in my life. My credit score is 780+
Of course I am trying to pitch for multiple projects to up the monthly income and save some money to foreclose smaller loans. But that’s super tough and uncertain so can’t rely on that.
Any advice my entrepreneur gurus? Be gentle please. 🙏🏻
