I built a GRE vocab app after getting frustrated with every existing one. Sharing it here because this community is the actual target audience. (I'm the developer)

Quick context so this doesn't feel like a random ad: I'm not a GRE student. I'm an Android developer. I got into this because I kept seeing the same complaint repeated across GRE forums, YouTube comments, and Reddit threads and it genuinely puzzled me.

"I studied these words for weeks. I still blanked on them during the test."

People were putting in the hours. The effort was real. But something about the method wasn't working.

After a while I think I figured out what it was.

There's a difference between recognising a word and recalling it. Recognition is when you see a word on a flashcard, think about it for a second with the answer right there on the back, and feel like you know it. Recall is when an exam gives you a sentence with a blank and you have to produce the right word with zero hints and real time pressure.

Those are genuinely different cognitive tasks. And most vocabulary apps, including the popular ones, only train recognition. The format itself builds the wrong skill.

The other thing I kept running into was Anki. A lot of serious learners go there because the spaced repetition algorithm (SM-2) is legitimately the best method for long-term retention. The science behind it is solid. But the Android experience is rough and you have to build every deck yourself from scratch. For someone already in the middle of GRE prep that setup cost is enough to make people quit before they start.

So I built WordNerd.

It ships with 5000+ words already inside covering GRE, GMAT, SAT and IELTS. Every word has a hand-crafted mnemonic, not just a copied definition. You flip a card, you rate your recall honestly (Forgot / Struggled / Got It / Easy), and the app automatically schedules your next review based on how you actually did. Words you know well fall away for weeks. Words you keep blanking on come back the next day. No deck building. No setup. Open it and start.

There's also a Weak Word Radar that surfaces words you're below 50% accuracy on after multiple exposures so you're not spending time on words you already have.

I'm the developer and I'm genuinely here if anyone has questions or feedback. If you try it and something doesn't work the way you expected, I want to know.
