Co-owned vehicle

Location: Virginia, USA

I co-signed as primary with my ex for a vehicle. How do I get out of this contract? I don't make the payments or insure it. Can I write a bill of sale to him so its his because I need this account off my credit being thats it is not my responsibility. Please help
