I (20M) need advice on how to handle my GF (20F) leaving for a family trip after her parents excluded and blamed me. We’ve been together 3 years.
Hi everyone, I really need some objective perspectives right now because I feel like I'm losing my mind, and I don't know if I'm the one being unreasonable here or if she is.
I am 19M, a college student living by myself in a rented apartment, and I’ve been with my girlfriend for almost 3 years. Lately, our relationship has cooled down significantly because of her family, and I’ve become more distant because the environment at her place is completely suffocating.
To give you some context: I recently visited her family and I was made to feel completely unwelcome. Her mother totally ignored me at the dinner table—didn't ask me a single question—and their household rule is that we always have to keep the bedroom doors wide open, as if we are under interrogation. Zero privacy, zero respect. I felt like a piece of supervised furniture.
Two nights ago, things finally hit a breaking point. She texted me to announce, completely detached, that her father (who works in Italy) is taking her on a trip there, and that she is leaving with her family for 5 days next month.
When I pointed out that nobody had even invited me and that she was leaving me completely on my own right after we had been trying to fix things between us, her response was: *"Oh, did you want to come too?"*, as if I were a jealous 5-year-old throwing a tantrum over a vacation, rather than her partner of 3 years.
On top of that, she started turning the blame on me. She threw this text at me: *"Well, I already know you didn't enjoy spending time with my parents when we went to the beach, and that you can't stand them, so that's why they didn't invite you."*
I admitted the truth—that I genuinely did not enjoy going to the beach with them—but I explained exactly why: because even when I went to the beach with them, they completely ignored me, didn't ask me a single thing, and made me feel like an absolute intruder. Anyone would have felt miserable in my shoes.
Her ultimate excuse was: *"Well, you felt like a stranger because it was only the second time they had ever seen you"* (again, mind you, we have been together for 3 years!). When she realized I was dismantling all her poor excuses and refusing to let myself be her scapegoat just so she could leave for her trip with a clean conscience, she shut down the conversation with: *"Well, what else do you want me to say?"*
Deep down, she is a good person, but it seems like she is completely controlled by her parents. She has zero independence at 19 and normalizes this extremely cold behavior toward me. Plus, she always shifts the blame onto me just so she can go on her vacations guilt-free.
The honest truth is that I am absolutely terrified of starting over. Erasing 3 years of a relationship and learning how to be completely alone in my apartment feels like a massive mountain to climb. But I feel like I have absolutely no status in this relationship, and I am always put on pause whenever her parents "call the shots."
