Guardians Waste Late Comeback as White Sox Walk Off Cleveland in Ninth Inning

The Cleveland Guardians were one strike away from opening a crucial American League Central series with a statement victory on Monday night.

Instead, a devastating ninth-inning collapse allowed the Chicago White Sox to walk away with a 6-5 win at Rate Field.

The loss prevented Cleveland from gaining ground in the division race as the White Sox pulled even with the Guardians atop the AL Central standings.

Chicago struck first in the second inning when Braden Montgomery ripped an RBI double to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead.

Chicago added another run an inning later as Andrew Benintendi hit a run-scoring single, extending the White Sox lead to 2-0.

Guardians starter Gavin Williams settled in to continue his recent stretch of strong performances. After allowing the early runs, the right-hander found his rhythm and kept Cleveland within striking distance. Williams finished his night having allowed two runs on five hits over five innings while striking out eight and walking just one.

He retired the first five batters he faced and closed his outing by sitting down the final eight hitters in order.

While Williams was sharp, White Sox starter Anthony Kay was equally impressive. Kay dominated Cleveland's lineup through six scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out eight.

Chicago added to its lead in the sixth inning when Randal Grichuk hit a pinch-hit solo home run, his third pinch-hit homer of the season, pushing the White Sox lead to 3-0.

The Guardians finally broke through in the seventh. Facing reliever Grant Taylor, Cleveland mounted its first serious threat of the night. Kahlil Watson delivered a memorable moment, recording his first Major League hit with a two-run single that cut the deficit to 3-2.

Two batters later, Rhys Hoskins came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to center field, tying the game and bringing new life to the Cleveland dugout.

The White Sox regained the lead in the bottom of the  seventh inning, thanks to a Sam Antonacci RBI single, moving back in front 4-3.

Then down to their final three outs, the Guardians showed resilience once again in the ninth. Brayan Rocchio, who enjoyed one of his best games of the season with a 3-for-5 performance, helped ignite the rally.

Cleveland pushed across two runs and appeared poised to complete a remarkable comeback when Kyle Manzardo's sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run. After a replay review overturned the initial call, the Guardians suddenly took a 5-4 lead and were one inning away from victory.

Cleveland turned to closer Cade Smith, who entered the night leading Major League Baseball in saves and had not blown a save opportunity since 14th April. But Chicago refused to go quietly.

After putting runners on base, the White Sox mounted one final rally. With two outs and the game hanging in the balance, rookie Sam Antonacci lined a two-run single into the outfield, bringing home both the tying and winning runs.

The Guardians challenged the play at the plate, but the call was upheld, ending the game in heartbreaking fashion.

For Cleveland, the defeat was particularly painful given the way they battled back from a three-run deficit and appeared on the verge of stealing a victory. Instead, the Guardians were left with a crushing loss that slipped away in the final moments.

Now Cleveland will look to regroup and even the series on Tuesday night.
