Mo Ran is the most unreliable narrator EVER
So I’ve been going back and re-reading some parts and really marinating as one does after having completed a journey of this magnitude and even though it seems obvious, it just hit me that Mo Ran is literally the most unreliable narrator I’ve ever read, and there’s something really brilliant in the writing here considering that bro literally goes through both lifetimes not knowing a damn thing >!cuz his memories are either warped or just straight up gone!< 😭
I feel like the biggest indicator of this is Xue Meng. When we first meet MengMeng we think he hates Mo Ran with the fury of a thousand suns and GRADUALLY begins to love him because that’s what Mo Ran initially thinks when he’s reborn. But the more flashbacks are unveiled, the more it seems obvious to me that Xue Meng has loved him from the beginning. Like yeah, he was a spoiled little shit but I feel like he thought of Mo Ran as his older brother from the moment they met, and all the antagonism was just normal sibling rivalry mixed with him used to being an only child. Like even in the second chapter of book 1 when Rong Jiu and that dude come to Sisheng Peak and accuse Mo Ran of thievery, Xue Meng immediately comes to his defense even though he KNOWS Mo Ran did it. It was very much giving “nobody messes with my annoying ass brother but me” and I love it.
