Is this a bad time to trim my flame acanthus?

I have numerous flame acanthus in my front beds around my walkway to my front door. I pruned them back pretty severely around early March, but they have exploded and are taking over the walkway again.

Is it a bad idea to trim them back during this heat?

I am still new to gardening in Texas, and I'd prefer to avoid killing them if I can help it...
