AIO for keeping my contractor through “white lies”

I bought my first home that wasn’t a condo 8 months ago. Going into it I knew it needed a lot of work. After getting estimates I chose who I thought was going to be my future brother in law. He does really good work but worked a full time job so it was going to be a weekend/after work thing. He drew up a contract and got it notarized.

It was going great the first 2 months. After their engagement ended (I don’t know why didn’t ask) he still agreed to finish the work. He would ask how she’s doing and I would tell him she’s doing bad and talks about him still. I would promise to relay messages that I just didn’t. She is actually seems like she’s doing good and has moved on.

The reason for the post is my girlfriend was home and he gave her a bouquet of flowers with an envelope and asked me to deliver it. Never planned on taking it over so my girlfriend and I read the letter. It was…. a lot.

My girlfriend thinks it’s wrong to give him false hope but WE CANT AFFORD ANYONE ELSE. More damage than expected was found and he’s just been giving us a price individually for each project. I know for a fact the prices would increase to a more standard not family rate.
