EU economics graduate planning to work in Sweden after a Master’s — how realistic is my plan?

Hej everyone,

I am a 23-year-old Economics graduate from Spain and an EU citizen. I will soon begin a Master’s degree in Economic Analysis, and my goal is to prepare myself over the next 12–18 months to look for my first professional opportunity in Sweden after graduation.

My main interests are:

- Applied econometrics

- Economic and data analysis

- Macroeconomics

- Policy evaluation

- Research

- Consulting, banking or risk analysis

I currently have C1-level English and experience using R and Gretl. During the Master’s, I plan to strengthen my quantitative skills, complete practical projects and, ideally, gain relevant internship experience.

I am also aware that speaking English alone may not be enough. I would be willing to start learning Swedish now and aim for at least an A2–B1 level before relocating.

I would appreciate honest advice on the following:

  1. How realistic is it for a recent EU graduate with this profile to find a junior analyst, economist, research or consulting role in Sweden?

  2. Are there sectors where English is genuinely used as the working language, or would Swedish normally be required even for quantitative positions?

  3. Which skills should I prioritise during my Master’s to become more competitive in Sweden?

  4. Should I focus mainly on Stockholm, or are Gothenburg, Malmö or other cities also worth considering?

  5. Would employers value Swedish at an intermediate level, even if I were not yet fully fluent?

I am not planning to move without preparation or expect the process to be easy. I would like to use the next year to build a realistic profile and understand what Swedish employers actually look for.

I would especially appreciate responses from economists, analysts, researchers, recruiters or other international professionals working in Sweden.

Tack!
