How do you guys react when drivers heckle you?
I have built up a couple of rapid fire instant responses to a couple of the most common things done to or said to me by drivers when they heckle/harass me
If a driver honks at me I usually ignore them, but occasionally I get to catch up to them at a red light, stop sign, or just in traffic and it’s always great because I get to honk back as I drive past (this is technically illegal in many areas so be careful if you wanna copy me…)
If somebody yells the classic “get out the road!” I instantly respond “come make me get out the road”, “do something about it”, or if I’m in a calmer mood I yell “bikes are allowed on the road, deal with it!”
If somebody just hurls curse words or insults at me, I just smile and wave at them, or do a thumbs up. These types of people seem to want aggression so acting like you’re above hostility and giving them a smile and a smug gesture really makes them crazy.
I wish my city did more to emphasize to drivers that bikers are allowed on the roads. Yea, we have some barebones bike infrastructure and the city claims to be “bike friendly” but it is all but untrue. And of course, if you use a bike to commute then you’re going to get heckled on average at least once a day, even if you take the less busy roads. So I have just learned to have fun with hateful drivers rather than letting them get to me, that’s why I game-ify the way I deal with them because it’s a nearly daily thing
