How much faith do you have in Brad Stevens?
I think that's really what this comes down to.
So first of all, for all the people who are saying the reporting that the Celtics are listening to offers for Jaylen Brown is a non story because "teams are always listening to offers" – that seems ridiculous to me. Do you really think this would be reported on if the Celtics didn't have more than just a curious interest in trading him?
So assuming that this is a real possibility, which I think we should, how do we feel about it?
My gut and my brain tell me this is a horrible idea. Jaylen Brown is a top 15 player in this league, so unless we're getting a top 15 player back, or someone with really high potential like a Cooper Flag, I don't think we win this trade, unless we score on a draft pick, but that's like rolling the dice + they'd take time to develop, and Tatum's in his prime right now.
I understand that we can't win as presently constructed, but this is a league where having top tier talent matters. We have 2 of those guys. You don't throw one of them away for a chance to build a more well rounded team. We'd be better off running this back again because AT LEAST we have Tatum and Brown and WHO KNOWS? Maybe they get hot in the playoffs? Maybe Mazzulla can tweak his basketball philosophy a bit so we aren't so reliant on the 3 and we become less predictable in a playoff setting?
I mean I'd feel a million times better going into next season with just a few changes, Mazzulla expressing a willingness to change and a desire to grow, but we still keep our core duo of Tatum and Brown than I would just about any REALISTIC scenario where we trade Brown. Because that's the thing: what do we REALISTICALLY expect to get back for him? Are any of us expecting to get a top 15 player back? Because I'm not, and anything short of that seems like it could be a potential disaster, like an all time bad franchise move...
... and then I remember we're dealing with Brad Stevens and I think the question becomes how much faith do we have in him? Even when our ears and our eyes and our guts and our brains are telling us something different. Even if we can't justify it, or defend it with logic because we're unable to see it, and I think the answer for me is I'm going to trust Brad Stevens until he proves me wrong. I won't lie and say that doesn't make me nervous, because it does, and I don't totally know how to feel about it because it's against my nature to do so, but I think that's where I'm at with all this right now.
What about all of you?
