**The Associated Press reports that all three congressional candidates** endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won their Democratic primaries on June 23. Brad Lander and Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated sitting members of Congress, while Claire Valdez secured the nomination for an open House seat. The clean sweep gives Mamdani evidence that his political influence now extends beyond City Hall.

**Reuters finds the sharpest upset in New York’s 10th District,** where former city comptroller Brad Lander defeated Representative Dan Goldman. The contest placed a Mamdani-backed progressive against an incumbent supported by House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, turning a local primary into a test of competing power centers inside the party.

**AP reporting shows that Darializa Avila Chevalier delivered the** slate’s second incumbent defeat by beating five-term Representative Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District. Claire Valdez, a state assemblymember, won the Democratic nomination in the heavily Democratic 7th District, making both candidates strong favorites to join Congress after November’s general election.

**The Wall Street Journal identifies affordability, Israel and Gaza,** and the Democratic Party’s ideological direction as major forces shaping the results. Mamdani’s allies paired left-wing economic proposals with strong criticism of Israeli government policy, while establishment Democrats warned that similar positions could prove harder to defend in politically competitive districts outside New York City.

**Why it Matters:**

**Mamdani has begun converting personal popularity into an organized political bloc.** **The victories could strengthen the progressive wing in Congress and encourage more primary challenges against established Democrats. Their national significance will depend on whether the coalition’s affordability-focused message can travel beyond deep-blue urban districts without creating liabilities for candidates in swing seats.**

**Is this sweep the beginning of a durable national movement, or does Mamdani’s political formula depend on conditions that are uniquely New York?**
