Address me: What is an elephant?
Today I want to address something quickly. This is of course not meant to be offensive, but just to bring attention to issue i have noticed with many of the posts i see here nowadays.
What is an elephant?:
First off, the dictionary defines an elephant as:
elephant
noun [ C ]
UK
/ˈel.ɪ.fənt/ US
/ˈel.ə.fənt/
a very large grey mammal that has a trunk (= long nose) with which it can pick things up
(see the joke that i did there? i know, amazing.)
Now onto the more important thing. This subbredit defined a good elephant post as being 20% elephant, 80% room. (To refer, check “https://www.reddit.com/r/addressme/comments/1tnyit8/how\_to\_make\_a\_good\_address\_me\_post/“ by our Mod team.
The essence of this subreddit.
Notice something about every post of the week? It makes you think. This subreddit is here for jokes that take a good five seconds to look at to laugh, and to make your brain work. I personally am on this sub to see smart, well conceived jokes. Feel free to correct me, I am not a Mod nor an expert, but personally only today out of the seven elephant posts i saw, three were a one look elephant (with a porn punchline, too).
I think this is an issue that should be addressed. We need good quality posts again. Now, I won’t complain about cropped text (which is tiptoeing on the line of effort for me) and porn punchlines, as I don’t want to be completely banned off the internet but keep in mind, these all take about a second to scroll past since they have no true room, just a huge elephant. By the way, if you got this far, sneak a prime number into your comment so I know which ones have read it all and truly deserve a thought-out response. There aren’t an endless supply of elephants (Shockingly roughly about 455,000-500,000 left in the wild globally) and low effort posts don’t increase the amount of posts, they decrease the quality instead.
What do we do to combat this?
Toady, I won’t ask the Mod team to do anything. I am not a reddit mod, and I have no training nor experience. The only thing I ask of the Mod team is to take note of this issue, or correct me on what they intended this sub to be. I repeat, I am not an expert, simply a person on the internet. However I am a person that has worked hard on this post and genuinely tried to express my thoughts in a good, constructive way.
What I truly ask today is if the community, fellow r/addressme posters to pay attention to what you upvote a post. Said by the member team themselves, If this is a low effort post, it should be on r/elephantanarchy instead. Just saying. I hope you learnt something today, or let your mind stretch and think (I know, hard task for everyone). Please just try to genuinely think about my points. Logging off now, Good bye.
