Am I wrong for checking my husband’s phone?
I feel like I just need to write this down but would appreciate advice all the same.
My husband(27M)and I(27F) have been having a few issues recently regarding some trauma we went through together. We’ve been together for nearly 9 years and married for 3. I had a stroke 2 years ago and it left me disabled on one side of my body. It took a pretty big toll on my husband as he became my carer all of a sudden and he didn’t really process it, he just went into autopilot and did what he had to do. He’s been absolutely amazing but been struggling mentally and now, 2 years on, it’s finally caught up with him. He was honest with me and told me he felt like he didn’t love me like he used to and that we are different now. Obviously I was glad he opened up to me and was admitting that he needed help but it also sent me into a pretty bad spiral. I was nearly 40 weeks pregnant with our first child at the time (he’s now a month old) and I had no idea what was on the horizon for us.
He’s also very close with someone at work, we’ll call her G (23F). She’s quite similar to me. I know her fairly well, my husband and I work at the same place so I considered her a friend too. I knew they were quite close friends and never really thought much of it but in the times that we were in a low place he said he thought he might have feelings for her but wasn’t sure if this was just platonic or not as he doesn’t really have any friends of his own and hasn’t done since we’ve been together. My head did a complete 180 and I have been pretty paranoid since. I trust that nothing has happened between them and it’s worth noting that she is also in a relationship which seems stable.
I made the decision to go through their WhatsApp messages; which I absolutely hated making that decision but I was in such a panic i didn’t know what else to do. They message each other a lot. Way more than he messages anyone else, and it’s constant back and forth yet he struggles to reply to anyone else, he replies quickly to me though.
A few weeks ago, a few days after the birth of our baby boy, he went for a run to clear his head and that evening told me that he’d had a real think about everything and decided he wants to do grief counselling to address the issue of the grieving that he hasn’t processed from my stroke. he said he does love me and that both me and our son are his top priority and he’s willing to really give this a go. I was so happy and relieved.
Yet, something deep down in me still felt incredibly uneasy. A week or so later I was able to check his messages with ‘G’ again and went back to the day he made his revelation to me. He had been messaging her saying he felt unhappy and wasn’t in a good place and there was one message that hasn’t sat right with me since. He asked her that if it wasn’t for her boyfriend would they (her and my husband) have any chance together. She didn’t really have an answer for him and just said it’s complicated. There are then a few messages that he has unsent so i can’t see what they said but she replied saying she saw them and she was really happy that he was wanting to “give it a go with Ellie(me)” so he obviously decided in that time that was what he wanted to do.
Am I a bad person for reading through their conversation? If anything, it just made me spiral more and I can’t talk about it because I can’t let him know that I did that.
\*\*TL;DR;\*\* : Am I wrong for checking my husband’s messages with a woman who I believe he is emotionally attached to?
