Can't get hired in finance and my visa clock is running out
I cannot seem to get hired no matter what I do here, and I am really lost at this point and it's wearing down on me heavily.
A month ago, I got back from immigration after renewing my Visa, which is currently 特定活動, for Job Searching.
They gave me 2 months less than I was expecting. This was a real shock to my plans, as I was at least hoping to have room for the September hiring and if that fails fall back on something out of my field.
This has moved my deadline up to Late September.
My background:
I originally came to Japan in the late 2010s, when as part of my undergrad studies I did a year exchange program with one of the Universities here. It was from that point that I decided I had to move here. When that program was completed, I returned to the US and finished my bachelor's in Finance. Before I graduated, I attended the Boston Career Forum for the first time.
At this time, my Japanese was far from where it should have been, I had N3, but obviously not enough to get hired. I had an offer from one of the companies, but they said they didn't want me in Tokyo, they wanted me in New York.
I turned that down.
That led me to deciding to attend a language school as soon as I could. The pandemic altered those plans and delayed my arrival by several months, but I did eventually make it back. I attended this language school while continuing my Job hunt, but still couldn't land anything.
I then decided to enter a master's program at a top Japanese university, and later got my N1. I wrote my thesis on something directly related to Investment Banking. After that, I went to the Boston Career Forum again, but the response was much worse than my first time, and I didn't even get any interviews.
While finishing my Master's program I finally got a few good interviews and proceeded really far with a bulge bracket, but they chose another candidate. I thought at the time that was going to be where I started my career.
After graduating I got on my current Visa, 特定活動, and have since still been sending out applications, to basically instant rejection at the application stage.
More recently, I attended the Boston Career Forum again, and got a mildly better reception, and proceeded with one of the 日系 securities firms, but didn't land any offers.
That was when I really started trying everything I possibly could.
I have bought paid resume review services.
I started buying tutoring lessons on financial Japanese.
I bought professional headshots for my resume.
I've been focused so much on trying to improve every single aspect I possibly can with what resources I have, but I still can't get anything.
My Undergraduate isn't a highly prestigious school, but it is on Japan's Ministry of Justice list of designated universities that earn bonus points under the Highly Skilled Professional points system for permanent residency, so it has some value I feel.
My Grad school is one of the most famous in Japan, and my thesis was directly related to the industry.
My Japanese is not perfect, I will be the first to admit that, I know that's something many people overstate when talking about their life here.
But I do not have any issues in daily life, and am really confident in my conversational Japanese.
I've been trying to improve in specifically financial contexts, by paying a tutor online to have someone to talk to about these concepts. It's really helped, I've gone from being really slow at remembering terminology to being able to discuss bylaws and shareholder repurchase agreements at a reasonable level. I am still slow, I probably take 50% longer to read a 日経 article than a Native speaker.
But all of that, I just can't seem to get anything even slightly related to my field.
I've been reaching out to as many recruiters as I can, even more than before, and most have either been saying, sorry we can't help you at your experience level or that they don't have anything. A few have put me forward, but they have turned me down for lack of experience.
At this point I'm really worried for my future here.
This has all been so far from what I had planned for myself.
