How do I explain this book?

The story is beautiful, and even beautiful is the lesser of a description for the beauty of the story.

>!The story of Sunja, Hansu, her journey to Japan, her hardships, her poverty, the death of Isak, her beautiful relationship with Kyunghee, the birth of Noa and Mozasu, Hansu returning to her life, everything feels beautiful.!<

>!Noa was my baby, least to say. I was never this attached to any character as I was for him. He was a smart boy, who studied, went to Waseda only to drop out after hearing of his true father and left everyone. When he committed suicide, I felt so fckin bad. Sunja, his mother is someone I admire a lot. She could have led a comfortable life being Hansu's mistress but she chose to be on her own, and worked hard till there was nothing left of her. Sunja might have never considered herself beautiful but she was the most beautiful character in the story for me. The same went for Kyunghee. !<

>!Hansu...what do I say? It's flawed but yet a strong character. That's the beauty of his character. He had kept Sunja within his tabs since the day she went to that pawnbroker. He could have interfered with Sunja's married life, but he chose to watch her from a distance, giving her the restaurant job, taking her to the farmhouse, providing her with living quarters. Now, I'm not defending him, providing for her was the bare minimum, given what he did to her. But the book explores his love for his son, the love for the woman who gave birth to his son and the way he stayed with her till the very end. From my understanding, the book explores that even the most horrible people do have some kindness or empathy in them.!<

>!Mozasu was a smart guy, that's the one line I have for him. He single-handedly raised his family's status and raised them from poverty. He was probably the smartest and yet a very empathetic character, given his love for Yumi, Etsuko (won't really call it love, or maybe it was, idk), the way he prayed for Hana.!<

>!I didn't like Hana in the beginning, but as she contacted AIDS and her twisted nature stemming from her mother's multiple affairs, made me kinda sympathise with her in the later part of the book.!<

I didn't cry for this book, like most people say that Pachinko made them cry. I didn't cry a bit but yeah this book is very moving. The last 4-5 pages of >!Sunja remembering Hansu in her dreams from the time when she was a girl, her going to Isak's grave and the age of her given at the end of the book, 73, made me a tad emotional.!< It's like watching a girl grow up to 73, having her own children and watching her complete story from her children to her grandchildren. Deeply moving.

10/10 recommend.
