My closet is basically a museum of past versions of me

I was clearing out a shelf last night and realized my closet isnt organized by color or by season. its organized by who i used to be. Theres like four different women living in there and i am currently only one of them, and honestly not even the loudest one.

Every phase i went through just left clothes behind like sediment. I dont wear them, but throwing them out feels weirdly like throwing out the version of me that did, so they just stay. Quietly taking up space on the good hangers.

So here are the women currently renting space in my wardrobe, rent-free:

The office era. Blazers, structured trousers, those "smart" shoes that genuinely hurt my feet. I work from home now and i defenately havent buttoned a blazer since about 2021, but there they hang, ready for meetings that are never coming.

The going-out era. Sequins, a dozen going-out tops, heels i physically cannot stand in anymore. She had stamina and a worryingly high pain tolerance. I have a couch and a 10pm bedtime and zero regrets about it.

The "when i lose weight" era. A whole little section two sizes down, kept like a promise i made to myself and now quietly resent a bit every single time i open that side of the closet.

The cozy remote era, which is the current one. About 9 identical soft things in slightly different shades of oatmeal, because comfort won the war and i stopped pretending otherwise a long time ago.

The big-life-change pile. Clothes from before a move, a job i left, a breakup i dont really think about much anymore. They smell like a different apartment sometimes and it catches me completley off guard when it happens.

And the aspirational hobby era. The barely-used running gear. The apron for the painting i was definitely going to start. Clothes for a whole life i thought id have by now and somehow still kind of might, one day.

I dont think keeping all of this makes me a hoarder. Its kind of a timeline, and im weirdly fond of it. But it is a little wild how much of my closet is quietly dedicated to women who dont really live here anymore and havent for years.

So now i try to ask myself one simple thing whenever i pick something up. Is this actually me, or is it just a souvenir of me? Some stuff i keep completely on purpose, because the memory is genuinely worth the hanger space. Other things i realised i was only ever keeping out of guilt, and those ones are so much easier to let go of now that ive noticed. Its not a big dramatic purge or anything like that. Im just being a bit more honest with myself about which era i actually live in these days.

So im curious, whats the era your closet is secretly stuck in - the version of you that moved on but the clothes never quite got the memo?
